INFLAMMATORY BOWEL
DISEASE is a chronic disease usually
diagnosed in younger people (15 to
30 years of age) with significant im-pact
on quality of life. Around 10%
of patients with inflammatory bowel
disease do not respond to current
biologic therapies, and 30% lose their
response within the first year. Novel
biologic therapies for severe inflam-matory
bowel disease maybe more
effective, and allow patients to recover
their quality of life to a large extent by
minimizing symptoms and reducing
hospitalizations. These drugs may
even reduce the number of patients
ultimately requiring surgery.
