submissions, UEG offers a number of
awards.
UEG Week Vienna 2018 Awards
Research Prize
The UEG Research Prize winner
2018 was Cisca Wijmenga for her
outstanding work “A coeliac mucosal
barrier-on-chip model to investigate
its role in initiation of coeliac disease.”
Cisca Wijmenga´s research focuses on
the understanding of genetic variation
and how this leads to phenotypic
variation, with a particular focus on
the relationship with autoimmune
diseases. Her work is interdisciplinary,
including genetics, epidemiology,
immunology computational biology
and bioinformatics. She currently
holds the position of Lodewijk Sandkuijl
Endowed Chair and Professor
of Human Genetics at the University
Medical Centre Groningen, the
Netherlands.
Lifetime Achievement Award
The UEG Lifetime Achievement
Award winner 2018 is Professor Colm
O´Morain. Colm O´Morain was a
Consultant Gastroenterologist and
Professor of Medicine at the Faculty
of Health Sciences in Trinity College,
Dublin and Tallaght University Hospital,
Dublin. As Dean of the Faculty
and during his academic career, he has
been a key opinion leader in multiple
major fields of gastroenterology.
Advocacy work by UEG in Brussels
was initiated under Colm OMorain´s
chairmanship of the UEG Public Affairs
Committee and he was instrumental
in advocating for colorectal
cancer screening on both a national
and pan-European level.

Journal Best Paper Award
The UEG Journal Best Paper Award
went to Joaquín Cubiella, as the first
author of the winning article titled
“Correlation between adenoma detection
rate in colonoscopy – and fecal
immunochemical testing – based
colorectal cancer screening programs”.
