Report on Guategastro2017 in

The Asociación Centroamericana y
del Caribe de Gastroenterología y
Endoscopia Digestiva (ACCGED),
together with the Asociación Guatemalteca
de Gastroenterología,
Hepatología y Endoscopia Gastrointestinal,
convened Guategastro2017:
the XII Congreso Nacional and XXVI
Congreso Centroamericano de Gastroenterología
y Endoscopia Digestiva
in Antigua, Guatemala.
The event was held from 27-29 of
July, 2017 at the Hotel Boutique Casa
Santo Domingo. The historic city
of Antigua was named a UNESCO
World Heritage site in 1979. Over
800 participants attended the event.
The Scientific Program was robust,
with sessions being held simultaneously
in three different halls. There
were 97 sessions, three work presentations
and 11 industry breakfast and
lunch events. For the Endoscopic
Workshop there were 16 sessions and
4 hands-on modules. In all we held a
total of 127 conferences.

the Presidents of the Central American
and Caribbean societies, as well
as Dr. Mirtha Infante of the Sociedad
Cubana de Gastroenterologia, which
was incorporated into ACCGED at
the conference.
We want to acknowledge the
support of the American College of
Gastroenterology in the scientific program
and promotion of the congress.
And I want to give special thanks to
my collaborators on the organizing
committee and to all our partners
who participated such as panel chairs
and moderators – and in general to all

Our forty guest speakers were from
not only Guatemala but included
international experts from throughout
Latin America: Argentina, Bolivia,
Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican
Republic, El Salvador, Honduras,
Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama
and Venezuela. Experts also participated
from Germany, Spain and the
United States.
We were especially pleased to welcome
Dr. José Roberto De Almeida,
President of the Pan-American Gastroenterological
Association (OPGE),
