In the evening the welcome cocktail
hour, combined with a satellite
symposium on treatment based on
the pathophysiology of constipation
and new therapeutic options, had a
magnificent setting: San Juan de Ulúa.
This is a small, walled island consists
of an old fortress, reputed to be the
most fearsome of the country, was
commanded to be built by Hernán
Cortés in 1519 as a defense against
the attacks of pirates and corsairs of
the time, and served as a penitentiary
in the viceregal and Reformation
times. It later housed such distinguished
guests as the President of
the Republic and “Benemérito de las
Américas” Benito Juárez. Nowadays
this legendary complex consists of a
museum and is open to the public,
creating a beautiful and special atmosphere
to welcome the congress.
The second day of activities started
with the lecture by Dr. Fermin Mearin
of Spain, who is a member of the
committee of ROME IV, on the topic
of constipation and irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS) with constipation: “A
review of the spectrum.” Continuing
with the lecture modules, module V
focused on microbiota in functional
disorders, an interesting and relevant
subject, where we began to discover
“What it is and what is its role in
health?” by Dr. Maria Eugenia Icaza.
Also “What is your role in gastrointestinal
diseases?” by Dr. Mercedes
Amieva Balmori, and finally “How
can you manipulate the intestinal
microbiota?” by Dr. Max J. Schmulson.
Referring to intestinal functional
disorders, the pathophysiology of IBS
treatment and the multifunctional
model for the treatment of IBS were
discussed; Dr. Aurelio López Colombo
lectured on functional distension
and how these patients are evaluated.
To finish the course, in the last
module we talked about the anorectal
functional disorders: touching on
surgical problems of the pelvic floor
dynamics, by Dr Luis Charúa Guindic,
and also discussing defective dyssynergia
and fecal incontinence and
treatment with biofeedback therapy
of the same.
The closing ceremony was led by
President of the Asociación Mexicana
de Gastroenterología, Dr. Aurelio
López Colombo. This ended an excellent
course which met the quality
standards of the Mexican Council of
Gastroenterology and which included
topics from physiopathology to the
diagnosis and treatment of functional
disorders. The final result was the
publication of the book “X Gastrotrilogia.”
In conclusion, this event was
considered the greatest of successes!
