On 29 May 2007 the World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) launched its annual World Digestive Health Day campaign with a focus on viral hepatitis.
Viral hepatitis is an important global health issue as a total of 400 million people are chronically infected with hepatitis B, and about half that number are chronically infected with hepatitis C. Together, these diseases are responsible for the majority of hepatocellular carcinoma cases, the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide.
WGO encouraged all members to organize an event to raise awareness about viral hepatitis in their community.
