Milwaukee, USA — February 20 2012 — The World Gastroenterology Organisation currently has 23 Global Guidelines and Cascades, which are written from a viewpoint of global applicability. Each Guideline goes through a rigorous process of authoring, editing and peer review and is as evidence based as possible. WGO is the only organisation however, that has adopted a global focus. Many WGO Guidelines are Cascade-based which offer different treatment options for diagnosis and treatment depending on the resources available. A Cascade is a hierarchical set of diagnostic or therapeutic techniques for the same disease, ranked according to the resources available.
The recently updated Probiotics-Prebiotics Guideline, chaired by Professor Francisco Guarner, Spain, was originally created in 2008. The updated version of the Guideline features two important tables: Evidence-based pediatric indications for probiotics and prebiotics in gastroenterology and Evidence-based adult indications for probiotics and prebiotics in gastroenterology. “During the last three years (2008-2010), an enormous amount of new evidence on the use of probiotics and prebiotics in practice has been published,” noted Professor Guarner, Chair of the Guideline, on why there was a need to update the guideline.
The Probiotics Guideline was created and updated with a global view, including representation from Pakistan, Israel, South Africa, Austria, Canada, India, Turkey, South Korea, France, The Netherlands, along with outside experts from Uruguay, Argentina, Canada, Ireland, the USA and Poland, and can be accessed at http://www.worldgastroenterology.org/probiotics-prebiotics.html.
Each WGO guideline is available in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Mandarin and Russian, and is updated as new information and evidence is discovered. The Global Guidelines Committee meets each year to discuss updating and creating new guidelines and consists of 30-plus members from around the globe.
Formed in 1935 and incorporated in 1958, The World Gastroenterology Organisation (WGO) is a federation of over 100 national societies and 4 regional associations of gastroenterology representing more than 50,000 individual members worldwide, focusing on the improvement of standards in gastroenterology training and education on a global scale.
