In collaboration between the WGO and the Gastroenterology Society of Kenya brings the launch of the WGO Nairobi Training Center. Inaugurated on 6 May 2016, the WGO Nairobi Training Center is located inside the Kenyatta National Hospital.
This Training Center was established to address this region's deficit of skilled personnel in the field of digestive health. To place in perspective, Kenya has a population of 40 million people being served by less than 30 gastroenterologists at different level of expertise, and the situation is worse in some countries in the region.
The Nairobi Training Center is located at the Kenyatta National Hospital, which is the teaching hospital for the University of Nairobi Medical School. Nairobi Medical School has served as the medical hub for the East African region receiving patients from Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti, DR Congo, Somalia, and Yemen among others. The University already has an established endoscopic unit and a liver clinic that have been running for over 30 years, and looks forward to providing the best in gastroenterology education in the area.
WGO Nairobi Training Center, in conjunction with the Gastroenterology Society of Kenya will begin an international annual training workshop in Nairobi for Africa. The Nairobi Training Center has trainings in ERCP in progress and will unveil a training program on basic endoscopy to launch in 2016. They are currently working on a curriculum for a two-year fellowship program in gastroenterology in collaboration with the University of Nairobi to start in 2017.
