The Gastroenterology Division at HCPA
The Gastroenterology (GI) Division, which consists of six professors from the UFRGS Internal Medicine Department and six gastroenterologists from the HCPA staff, is dedicated to the quality care of adult patients. HCPA offers government-board recognized fellowship programs in Gastroenterology, Digestive Endoscopy and Hepatology. The Endoscopy Unit, Digestive Motility Laboratory and Adult Liver Transplant Program (since 1996) are part of the Division (see below Figure 1). HCPA’s Pediatric Gastroenterology Division, Pediatric Liver Transplant Program, Radiology Division and Pathology Division specialized teams often work together with the GI Division team.
The Outpatient Clinic is divided into five specialized ambulatories: Hepatitis (GHE), Chronic Hepatitis (GHC), HIV/Hepatitis Co-infection (GHI), Liver Transplant (GTH), and Liver Transplant Recipients (GPT). Currently, In-patient Liver Clinic is responsible for more than half of the whole number of admittances in the GI Division.
The Hepatology Outpatient Clinic is responsible for over 6,000 consultations a year, specifically with patients diagnosed with viral hepatitis (co-infected and with HIV) and liver transplant candidates or recipients. HCPA Hepatology Inpatient Clinic is devoted to decompensate cirrhosis and/or hepatocellular carcinoma. It was responsible for more than 800 admissions in 2011. Moreover, since 1995 the HCPA Liver Unit is dedicated to adult and pediatric Liver Transplantation. Many papers that have been published nationally and internationally in important international peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet have derived from the HCPA Liver Unit.
